In recent years, ethofumesate's application and use range are extended to some extent in the international market. So, how's its development in China? Currently, China's ethofumesate is only used to control and prevent weeds in beet fields. Besides, ethofumesate manufacturers are very few in China. Along with the advanced production technology and the deepened development in the application of ethofumesate, it will enjoy a large development space in China.

Recently, India-based UPL Limited (UPL) is approved by the UK to use its Xerton (Active ingredient: ethofumesate) to control and prevent the annual weeds in winter wheat fields. Meanwhile, UPL hopes to add the function "pre-emergence weeding" on the product label to extend the use range of Xerton. Now, Xerton is merely for post-emergence weeding. Ethofumesate has good efficacy on malignant weed in sugarcane fields - rat-tail Alopecurus aequalis Sobol. Ethofumesate has been registered in China for 7 years. According to the Institute for the Control of Agrochemicals, Ministry of Agriculture, as of early-Dec. 2015, China had 4 valid registrations on ethofumesate. Of these, two were registered for TC by Jiangsu Good Harvest-Weien Agrochemical Co., Ltd. (Jiangsu Good Harvest-Weien) and Zhejiang Funong Bio-technology Co., Ltd. Also, Jiangsu Good Harvest-Weien is the first company to obtain formal registration on ethofumesate formulations in China in 2012, and the registration is valid for 5 years. Of course, this is the first time that ethofumesate formulation was registered in China. As of now, China only has two valid ethofumesate formulation registrations, namely 20% ethofumesate EC and 21% desmedipham·phenmedipham·ethofumesate EC, which were all of Jiangsu Good Harvest-Weien. Both of these two products were registered for controlling and prevent part of broad-leaf weeds and annual broad-leaf weeds in beet, with effective dose are 6-7 L/ha and 1,102.5-1,260 g/ha respectively.

Now, Jiangsu Good Harvest-Weien has obtained the production licenses of ethofumesate TC, 20% ethofumesate EC and 21% desmedipham·phenmedipham·ethofumesate EC. The company disclosed that its ethofumesate technical capacity is about 1,000 t/a recently. And it is the major ethofumesate producer in China.

Ethofumesate, a kind of selective herbicide, is mainly used to control broad-leaf weeds and gramineae weeds. It is widely applied on legume crops, beet (beet used as feed and sugar, red beet and Swiss chard), pasture and lawn. It is reported that Bayer CropScience AG has registered ethofumesate in Australia, Chile, and European Union countries, Iran, Japan, Morocco, North America, Russia, Switzerland, Turkey and Ukraine.

Since the use range of ethofumesate is still small in China, it enjoys a large development space in the future. Especially, with the advanced technology in development and application in China, it can be applied in more crops. Finally, the promotion and application of ethofumesate will be boosted.
